Different technical concepts are used for transmission over long distances. IP and Wi-Fi cameras usually use an existing internet connection at the location. Other systems can communicate via a mobile network and are therefore less dependent on an existing landline or Wi-Fi infrastructure. Which solution is sensible depends on which connection is available at the location and how independently the system should be operated.

Important note: Remote access requires a reliable data connection

The achievable distance in internet- or mobile-based video surveillance is usually not limited by the classic radio range between the camera and the viewer. What is crucial is whether there is a sufficiently stable data connection at the camera location. Weak Wi-Fi coverage, poor mobile network coverage, or low available upload speed can significantly affect the image quality and reliability of live access.
